Biography

East German luger Michael Walter participated in the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics, placing a disappointing fourth and fifth in the men’s singles. In 1985 he was World Champion and in 1981 finished third. At the Europeans Walter also won two medals, silver in 1988 with the team, and bronze in 1986 in the men’s singles. In 1984 he also won the overall World Cup and was East German Champion, adding four more silvers and a bronze at East German nationals.

After his active career Walter studied civil engineering and then owned a construction company in Annaberg-Buchholz. The company manufactured innovative and patented radiant heating systems. Michael Walter died in August 2016 after a long illness.
