Biography

German flatwater canoeist Kay Bluhm partnered André Wohllebe in the K-2 500 event at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and finished seventh, representing East Germany. He also won the bronze medal with the K-4 1,000 team. Bluhm then represented re-unified Germany at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Games, with new partner Torsten Gutsche. They won three gold and two silver medals in the K-2 500 and 1,000 events. Bluhm also won seven gold, four silver and three bronze medals at the ICF Flatwater Canoe World Championships.

Domestically, Bluhm won the K-1 and K-2 500 titles in 1988-89, and also the K-2 1,000 and K-4 1,000 in 1987-88. After re-unification, he added the K-1 500 national title in 1995, the K-2 500 title in 1991, 1994-96, and the K-2 1,000 title in 1991 and 1994. Bluhm later married his non-Olympian teammate Daniela Gleue. In 1992 he was awarded the German media award BAMBI. He also received the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.
