Dirk Joestel participated in the 1988 Seoul Olympics as a flatwater canoeist and finished eighth in the K-1 500. He was also on the West German K-4 1,000 team that was placed sixth. In 1990, he won the nationals with the RG Berlin K-4 squad. Joestel studied business economics and later became head of administration at the institute for human rights.
