Aigeira is located in the Greek region of Achaea, although the modern city is a few kilometres away from the ancient site. Settled since the middle neolithic, the town was first known as Hyperesia, and appeared in the Iliad under that name. The name Aigeira comes from the word for “goats”, as goats supposedly helped counter a hostile invasion. Two Olympic champions are known from Aigeira, Ikaros and Kratinos.
