Greek colonists founded the city in souther Illyria (present-day Albania) as Gylakeia, but later changed it in reference to the god Apollo. It was abandoned after it was mostly destroyed by an earthquake in the 4th century CE. Meneptolemos is the sole Olympic champion from Apollonia we know of, a winner of the boys’ stadion.
