The Olympic Programme Commission reviews and analyzes the Olympic Programme, reviewing sports, disciplines, and events for each sport at the Games of the Olympiad and the Olympic Winter Games. It also develops recommendations on the principles and structure of the Olympic Programme. These criteria are grouped in several areas, including history and tradition, universality, popularity, relevance to youth, image and environment, athlete health, and International Federation (IF) development and costs. The commission makes recommendations to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board and presents reports to the IOC Session. The commission is composed of IOC Members and representatives from the National Olympic Committees and the International Federations.
Some of the above was taken from the IOC official website. In 2025 new IOC President Kirsty Coventry formed the Olympic Programme Working Group, headed by Karl Stoss. In October 2026 the IOC announced that this commission would be disbanded and replaced by working groups on an ad hoc basis.
