The tournament was single-elimination tournament with 18 teams entered, thus necessitating a preliminary round with two matches prior to the round of 16. The London Organizing Committee surpassed all such records for venues, before or since, when it held the football matches at 11 different venues, as follows – Empire Stadium, Wembley, London; Selhurst Park, South Norwood, London; Arsenal Stadium, Highbury, London; Lynn Road Stadium, Ilford, London; Craven Cottage, Fulham, London; White Hart Lane, Tottenham, London; Champion Hill, East Dulwich, London; Griffin Park, Hounslow, London; Green Pond Road Stadium, Walthamstow, London; Goldstone Ground, Hove; and Fratton Park, Portsmouth.

The medal matches came down to Sweden defeating Yugoslavia, 3-1, for the gold medal and Denmark defeating Great Britain, 5-3, for the bronze medal.
