Medal Events 1

The 1948 Olympic hockey tournament took place at four sites around London – Guinness Ground, Park Royal; Lyons’ Ground, Sudbury; Polytechnic Ground, Chiswick; and Wembley Stadium. The tournament consisted of 13 teams separated into three groups, with four (A), four (B), and five (C) teams, who played a round-robin format. One team from Groups A and B, and two teams from Group C advanced to the semi-finals.

India had won the hockey gold medal in 1928, 1932, and 1936, and continued that streak by defeating the homeside British team in the final, 4-0. India would win again in 1952 and 1956. The Netherlands and Pakistan played for the bronze medal, and the match ended in a draw, with the Dutch team winning the re-play, 4-1, and the bronze.
