Fencing at the 1968 Summer Olympics

Dates 15 – 25 October 1968
Medal Events 8

Thirty-five countries sent representatives to compete at the newly built fencing hall of the Magdalena Mixhuca Sports City. The 1968 Olympics again saw the Eastern Bloc countries as the preeminent forces in the sport although, unlike Tokyo four years earlier, there was a victory for Western Europe as the French regained supremacy in the men’s team foil. The Soviet Union won the most Olympic titles with three and shared with Hungary the most medals in total as both returned home with seven. The most successful fencers at the Games were Győző Kulcsár of Hungary and Yelena Novikova of the USSR who both won two gold medals. The most popular performance came from the host nation’s Pilar Roldan who won a silver, Mexico’s first in Olympic fencing, in the women’s foil.
