Ice Hockey at the 1936 Winter Olympics

Dates 6 – 16 February 1936
Medal Events 1

The ice hockey matches were played on two different rinks. One was situated on a lake, the Rießersee, and thus had natural ice. The Olympia-Kunsteisstadion, also used for figure skating, had artificial ice. The tournament format consisted of four round-robin pools for the 15 teams. The top two in each pool advanced to two semi-final round-robin pools, with the top two from those pools advancing to a final round-robin pool. In the semi-final and final pools, matches between teams that had played earlier were carried over, and the match was not replayed. The Canadians lost to Great Britain in the semi-final pool, and this result had to count for the final pool. Canada later claimed that they did not know this rule, and was initially very upset over this. However, back in Canada, after the Olympics, most of the players placed the blame on their own officials for not understanding the rule.
