The Amateur-Athleten-Weltunion was founded on 10-12 June 1905, in Duisburg, Germany, as the first governing body for the sports of weightlifting and wrestling, with four founding members: Denmark, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. By then, both sports had already appeared at the Olympics with men’s events, starting in its inaugural edition, Athinai 1896.
However, this organization did not last long, and it was de facto disbanded on 18 May 1907, when the last members left. It would eventually become defunct on 14 July 1912, after the foundation of the succeeding Internationaler Weltverband für Schwerathletik.
