The sport of Australian Rules Football appeared at the Olympics only once, at Melbourne 1956, as a demonstration event.
The International Australian Football Council (IAFC) was formed in 1995, with one of its aims being to “establish and promote an official World Cup of Australian Football”. The inaugural Australian Football International Cup was held in 2002, in Melbourne, Australia, but the organization would soon dissolute.
Currently, the sport is governed by the Australian Football International (AFI), and the second International Cup, staged in 2005, was already played under the wing of this new organization.
