Australian Rules Football was a demonstration sport at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. It is not a recognized sport by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), is basically played only in Australia, and is no threat to ever appear on the Olympic Programme.
The international governing body of the sport was previously the International Australian Football Council (IAFC), which was formed in 1995. This organization would dissolute soon after the inaugural Australian Football International Cup, held in 2002. The second International Cup, staged in 2005, was already played under the wing of the sport’s current federation, the Australian Football International (AFI).
