Mixed doubles curling, featuring two players per team (one man, one woman), made its Olympic début at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. In 2026, mixed doubles in Cortina d’Ampezzo ran from 4-10 February, and featured 10 teams playing each other once, and the top four advancing to the playoffs. It is a fast-paced format played over eight ends, with each team delivering five stones per end and strategic elements like the Power Play adding tactical depth (allows the non-hammer team to move the two pre-positioned guards from the center of the house to the sides before the end begins).
Italy entered the Games as defending Olympic champions from Beijing 2022 and the 2025 World Champions in mixed doubles. Traditional curling powers Canada, Great Britain, Sweden, and the United States were expected to contend for medals. Italy started strong and won early matches, while Canada and Sweden stayed near the top with steady results, while the United Kingdom and Norway fought in the middle of the standings, and their final positions came down to the last draws.
The most dramatic storyline came at the cutoff line, where multiple teams entered the final day still mathematically alive. A handful of one-point games, including extra-end thrillers, ultimately determined the semi-finalists.
In the semi-finals, Great Britain’s Bruce Mouat and Jennifer Dodds and Sweden’s siblings Isabella Wranå and Rasmus Wranå were tied 3-3 through five ends. Sweden then stunned the Brits with a five-point sixth end, added one in the seventh, and secured a 9-3 upset win to reach the gold-medal final.
In the other semi-final, Italy’s Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner and the United States’ Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin traded big ends early, with the Americans taking a 7-5 lead in the sixth. Italy surged with three in the seventh, but with the hammer, Thiesse rolled a red stone away in the eighth end for a 9-8 U.S. victory.
In the gold-medal final, Sweden captured their first Olympic mixed doubles title with a 6-5 victory over the United States, which earned silver. It was America’s first Olympic curling medal in mixed doubles, with Thiesse becoming the first American woman to ever win an Olympic curling medal. The Italian hosts delighted the home crowd by defeating Great Britain 5-3 in the bronze medal game.
