The tandem match sprint heats were held in late afternoon of the first day of cycling competition. The semi-finals and final of the tandems took place the next day. The final was all English-speaking, between a British and South African pair. The Brits trailed behind the Springboks for four laps, but jumped at the bell and won by one length. Harry Ryan had won four National Cycling Union championships by 1920, and he later became a prominent cycling official. Thomas Lance became a bookmaker in Brighton.
