Longue paume is a form of jeu de paume - literally “game of the hand”. An important difference is that longue paume is played outside, while regular jeu de paume is an indoor sport. An ancestor sport of tennis, it is played in two forms: à enlevér (“removed”, with a neutral zone between halves) and à terrer (“grounded”, without obstacles between halves).
Longue paume was one of the many sports practiced at the 1900 Paris Olympic Games, albeit only with a demonstration status. The sport’s highest governing body, the Fédération Française de Longue Paume (FFLP), was created in 1921.
