Biography

Ice hockey defenseman Al MacInnis skated with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League from 1980 through 1983 although, having been drafted in 1981, he suited up for two National Hockey League games with the Calgary Flames during the 1981-1982 season and fourteen in 1982-1983. In 1983 he earned the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL’s top defenseman. He split 1983-1984 between Calgary and the Central Hockey League’s affiliated Colorado Flames but, from 1984 through 1994, he skated exclusively for Calgary, winning the Stanley Cup Championship, as well as the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, in 1989. During this time he also competed at the 1990 World Championships, but did not earn a medal. He was traded to the NHL’s St. Louis Blues in 1994 and was affiliated with the team until his 2006 retirement, although he only played in three games during the 2003-2004 season due to recurring problems from an on-ice eye injury suffered in 2001, and missed the entire 2004-2005 season due to the league lockout. In 1999 he won the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman, and he had his number (2) retired by the Blues upon his retirement. Internationally during this period he made appearances at the 1998 Winter Olympics, with two goals in six matches at a non-podium finish, and the 2002 Winter Olympics, where he suited up for six games and brought home one of Canada’s first Olympic gold medals in ice hockey since 1952. During his career he also captured seven titles as the hardest shooter in the NHL Skills Competition and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007. In November 2006, he was named Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Blues.
