Biography

Between 1953 and 1957 Antal Hajba competed as a wrestler of the Bp. Honvéd before switching to the water, taking up the canoe in 1957. Between 1957 and 1959 Hajba was a canoeist of the Kossuth Kayak Club, between 1959 and 1966 of the MHS, and between 1967 and 1971 of Egyetértés. Between 1961 and 1967 he won a ten Hungarian championship titles and was a member of the Hungarian national team between 1963 and 1967. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics Hajba finished fourth in the C-2 1000 meters with Árpád Soltész. At the 1966 World Championships in East Berlin he won the world title in the 10,000 meters.

He worked as a coach from 1969, obtaining his kayak-canoe coaching diploma in 1972 at the College of Physical Education. Between 1969 and 1972 he was the canoe coach of Egyetértés, in 1972 of the Canadian national team, and between 1972 and 1982 of the Bp. Honvéd. From 1982 Hajba worked as the head coach of the Paksi SE. In the meantime, he was the head coach of the South Korean canoe team for one year from 1987-88. Hajba was credited with establishing the kayak-canoe life in Paks, for which the city honored him with the Pro Urbe award, and he was included in the Hereditary Members of the Affiliation.
