In 1998 Romanian rower Gheorghița Munteanu placed 12th in the quadruple sculls at the Junior World Championships before finishing 13th a year later in the same event at the World Championships. Munteanu then moved to the coxless fours, finishing 10th at the 2003 World Championships to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. At the Athina Games the Romanian crew finished last in both their opening heat and the repêchage to finish 13th overall. Munteanu then became a regular in the eight, competing at several editions of both the World and European Championships over the next few years.
