Biography

An Ontario native and graduate of Langstaff Secondary School, ice hockey defenseman Gillian Ferrari had been a member of Canada’s national women’s ice hockey team for over half a decade before she was afforded her first opportunity to play at the Olympic Games in 2006. Prior to this she had played for many years with Team Ontario, winning a silver medal and being named top defenseman at the Midget Nationals in 1997 and gold at the 2000 and 2004 Women’s National Championships. She joined Brampton Thunder of the National Women’s Hockey League in 2004, which finished second in the NWHL championship that year. She also played internationally during this period, joining Team Canada in 2000, first captaining the under-22 team, then winning a silver (2003) and two gold (2002 and 2005) medals at the Nations Cup Championships. Prior to the Olympics, however, she was most noted as a member of the Canadian women’s team that took the gold medal at the 2004 World Championships.

Ferrari trumped this victory two years later as a member of the 2006 women’s ice hockey team that took the gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics, playing in five games. After this success, she was inducted into the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame. Her time with the sport was not at an end, however, and she joined the Calgary Oval X-Treme of the Western Women’s Hockey League in 2006, helping her team win gold medals in both the WWHL championships and the Women’s National Championships in 2007. With Team Canada in the World Championships, she won gold once more in 2007, followed by silver in 2008 and 2009. In her off time, she has studied civil engineering at Seneca College.
