Maurice Camyré had already been a provincial boxing champion in both the welter and middleweight divisions in his native Manitoba when, in 1935, he was crowned Canadian national champion and regional Golden Gloves champion in the welterweight category. This earned him a trip to the 1936 Summer Olympics as a member of the Canadian boxing delegation, where he lost by decision to American Chester Rutecki in the first round of the welterweight event. Soon after the Games Camyré began fighting as a professional, but an elbow injury ended his athletic career only a year later, in 1937. He eventually found work as an aircraft technician with Air Canada in 1941 and remained there until his retirement in 1975. He was inducted into one of Toronto, Ontario’s past incarnations of the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in 1977.
