Adam Faul

Adam Faul reached the pinnacle of his athletic career in the latter half of the 1940s. As a boxer, he first attracted attention in 1946 by winning the Saskatchewan provincial light-heavyweight title and then captured the Canadian national championship in this division the following year. Afterwards he began competing as a heavyweight and won the Saskatchewan provincial and Canadian national championships at this level in 1948. This accomplishment led to him being selected to represent his country in heavyweight boxing at the 1948 Summer Olympics. At the Games he received a bye in the first round and defeated Chile’s Victor Bignon by decision in the second, but lost in the quarter-finals to eventual silver medalist Gunnar Nilsson of Sweden, placing joint-fifth overall. A severe injury to his eye during this fight effectively ended his boxing career, although he was still contesting bouts as late as 1949.

Faul was also athletically active during the 1940s as a Canadian football player and appeared on the roster of the Saskatchewan Roughridgers from 1945 through 1947, although he only took the field for three games in 1946. He had spent his junior football career with the Regina East End Bombers Jr. for several years prior. Despite his short tenure, he became a founding member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders Players Alumni Association in 1980. By career he worked for the Canadian National Railway Company for many years until a severe injury led him to switch professions to government administration, where he remained until his 1994 retirement. He served as mayor of Spy Hill, Saskatchewan from 1976-1978 and again from 1981-1985 and also remained active in community sports through coaching and the foundation of a local boxing club. He was made a member of the Saskatchewan and Regina Sports Halls of Fame in 1976 and 2004 respectively.
