Chilean cyclist Mario Massanés represented his country at international events in the years after the end of World War II. In 1948 Massanés was selected to compete at the London Olympics, participating in the road race and the track sprint. In the latter he tied for fifth place, after being eliminated in the quarter-finals. Three years later he won bronze in the 1,000 metres match sprint at the 1951 Pan American Games in Buenos Aires. His brother Hernán also competed as a cyclist at the Olympics and Pan American Games.
