Biography

In 1951 Chilean cyclist Hernán Masanés won silver in the 1,000 metres track time trial at the Pan American Games in Buenos Aires. One year later Masanés was selected to compete at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, riding on both the road and track. While he did not finish in the road race, he placed 17th in the 1,000 metres time trial and competed in the sprint, where he lost out in the repêchage. Four years later he returned to the Olympics for the Games in Melbourne, this time just riding in the velodrome. Once again Masanés was eliminated in the repêchage in the sprint, but fared slightly better in the 1,000 metres time trial, placing 14th. His older brother Mario competed for Chile at the 1948 London Olympics.
