Australian Brian Tobin began his career as a tennis player before eventually becoming the President of the International Tennis Federation. Tobin played in his first Grand Slam in 1949 at the Australian Championships. He reached the fourth round in the singles at his home Grand Slam on three occasions (1957, 1960, 1961), with him being ranked in the top ten players in Australia from 1956 to 1962. In 1964 he captained the Australian team that won the Federation Cup, with him becoming a member of Tennis Australia the following year. By 1977 he had become the President of the organisation, before serving as the President of the International Tennis Federation from 1991 to 1999. Tobin was bestowed with multiple honours during his lifetime, including being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1986, and was awarded with the Olympic Order in Silver in 1999. He was inducted into the halls of fame of Sport Australia (1991), the International Tennis Federation (2003), and Tennis Australia (2004).
