Born in 1976, Kyrgyz businessman Aydar Akayev was the son of the former President of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev. Aydar studied management and business at the University of Maryland, graduating in 1998. From 2004 to 2005 he concurrently served as both the President of the National Olympic Committee of Kyrgyzstan and the President of the Boxing Federation of Kyrgyzstan.
