Biography

Joseph Stevenson was a halfback from Newcastle who played for the Australian side on their 1908-09 tour of the British Isles, France, and North America. He was injured early in the tour and played in only one game as a result. He played for South Newcastle, Walcha (NSW), and the Glebe-Balmain Rugby Football Clubs.

Stevenson enlisted in 1915 and served with the 1st Battalion. He arrived in France in April 1916 and was shortly thereafter wounded at the Battle of Pozières, receiving a gunshot to the thigh. He returned to duty but was injured twice more, rejoining his battalion at the Battle of Amiens in August 1918, before they returned to Australia. In 1919 he was moved to AIF (Australian Imperial Force) Headquarters in London where he played with the AIF Rugby team.
