Biography

Harvey Reti took up boxing at the age of 17 and won his first of four consecutive Alberta provincial championships as a light-welterweight in 1955. He joined the Canadian Forces in 1958 and became Army champion in 1960, repeating in 1961 and 1963. In between he won a bronze medal at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, behind Ghana’s Ike Quartey and Dick McTaggart of Great Britain. As Canadian champion from 1961 through 1964, his next stop was the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where he was eliminated in Round Two by Hungary’s István Tóth. He retired from his active career shortly thereafter, but later gained a reputation as a boxing coach in Yukon, where he established the Yukon Boxing Club in Whitehorse. His career with the military, meanwhile, lasted nearly two and a half decades.
