Biography

Rohan Dennis was an Australian road and track cyclist who specialized in the time trial on the roads. He competed at three Olympic Games, winning a silver medal in the 2012 team pursuit, and a bronze medal in the 2020 individual time trial. He won two medals in the individual time trial at the Commonwealth Games, with gold in 2022 and silver in 2014. Dennis won four medals on the track at the World Championships, in the team pursuit, with golds in 2010-11 and silvers in 2009 and 2012.

Dennis was twice World Champion in the individual time trial, winning consecutively in 2018-19. In the three Grand Tours he won seven individual stages, including a time trial stage at the 2015 Tour de France and two time trial stages at the Vuelta a España, one in 2017 and the other in 2022. In February 2015, he set the world hour record, recording 52.491 km in Grenchen, Switzerland, although the record lasted a bit less than three months.

Dennis rode in the pro peloton beginning in 2013 with Garmin-Sharp. He later rode for the BMC Racing Team, Bahrain-Merida, Team Ineos, and finally Team Jumbo-Visma in 2022-23. In his pro career he won the 2015 USA Pro Cycling Challenge and the 2015 Tour Down Under, both multi-stage races.

Dennis likely would have continued racing after 2023 except for the tragic events of 30 December 2023. He had been married to Australian cyclist Melissa Hoskins, also a World Champion and Olympian. Outside their home in Adelade, Hoskins was holding on to their car, driven by Rohan Dennis, who drove off, dragging her for a distance, which caused her death. In May 2025 Dennis pled guilty to one aggravated count of creating the likelihood of harm and was sentenced to one year, four months and 28 days in jail, with the sentence suspended for two years, pending a good behavior bond.
