Biography

French cyclist Lucien Aimar will be best remembered for winning the Yellow Jersey at the 1966 edition of the Tour de France. Aimar began his career in 1963 as an amateur, winning bronze in the road race at the Mediterranean Games before competing at the Tokyo Olympics one year later. In 1965 he turned professional and finished 11th overall at the Vuelta a España. His best performance came the following year when he won the Tour de France, finishing just over a minute ahead of Jan Janssen (NED). Despite winning the race, Aimar did not win any stages, with his first and only stage win coming a year later at the 1967 Tour, finishing sixth overall in the general classification.

In 1968 Aimar finished seventh in the Tour de France, along with a ninth-place finish at the Vuelta a España. That same year he also became the French national road race champion and had a top-ten finish in the road race at the UCI World Championships. Towards the end of his career he picked up multiple podium places, along with a stage win at the 1972 edition of Paris–Nice. At the end of the following year Aimar retired as a rider, becoming a technical adviser and a race organiser.
