Biography

Carmelo Barone was an Italian road cyclist. As an amateur, Barone achieved two wins at the 1975 Mediterranean Games, when he won both the road race and the 100 km team time trial. After the disappointment of Montréal, he turned professional in 1977 and won some races in his first year as a néo-pro, such as the Bernocchi Cup and the Baracchi Trophy time trial, paired with the Olympic champion Bernt Johansson. After these results Barone was called up to the national team and raced at the 1977, 1979, and 1980 World Championships.

Despite showing promise in his early years, Barone never reached the top of the peloton, although he won at Giro dell’Umbria in 1979, took the sixth stage of the 1980 Giro d’Italia, and won the 1980 Giro del Veneto. He ended his career in 1984 with a total of 11 wins. He participated in seven Giro d’Italia’s, finishing six, with a best result of 18th in 1979. He later ran a bike shop in Santa Croce sull’Arno, in the province of Pisa.
