Juan Carlos Cabrera began his sporting career as an American football player before turning to rowing, having success in both Mexico and internationally. In 2014 Cabrera competed at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, winning silver in both the single sculls and the quadruple sculls. Two years later he was part of the Mexican delegation for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where he placed eighth in the single sculls. Cabrera had further success in the single sculls, winning silver at both the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games and the 2019 Pan American Games. He was only 34-years-old when he died in December 2025.
