Biography

Danish cyclist Svend Erik Bjerg spent his career riding for Lyngby Cycle Club where he mainly focused on road races. Bjerg had his first national success at the Danish road race championships when he finished in second place in the team time trial in 1964. Two years later he went one better when Bjerg, Henning Petersen, and Per Norup won the same event. In 1967 the team, with the addition of Finn Stavnsholdt, defended their team time trial title at the Danish championships. Bjerg then competed in the road race at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where he finished in 38th place.

In 1971 Berg finished in second place in the road race at the Danish championships before he switched his focus to the track. The next year he finished in first place in the team pursuit at the national championships along with compatriots Reno Olsen, Bent Pedersen, and Per Lyngemark. This earned the quartet selection for the team pursuit at the 1972 München Olympics where they finished in 13th place, with Lyngemark replaced by Gunnar Asmussen. Berg’s final win came on the road in 1974 with victory in the one-day Rund um Düren race in Germany.
