Biography

P. “Aly” Alagendra played hockey for Malaya at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He played for the national team from 1953-59. Alagendra joined the police force in Selangor in 1950 and retired after 34 years as chief police officer in Selangor. Aly coached the Malaysian team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and then was an assistant manager in 1968 and 1972. In 2000, at Sydney, Alagendra served as Malaysian chef de mission.

Alagendra worked for many years in hockey administration. He became deputy president of the Malaysian Hockey Federation from 1980-2005, was a member of the International Hockey Federation technical committee from 1975-85, was vice-president of the FA of Selangor from 1960-70, and served as vice-president of the Malaysian Cricket Association from 1962-74. Alagendra was chairman of the 1988 Commonwealth Games hockey tournament in Kuala Lumpur, and deputy chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 2002 Hockey World, also in Kuala Lumpur. He served as secretary-general of the Asian Hockey Federation from 1990-2014, and was given honorary life president status. In 2000, he was awarded the Order of Merit by FIH at their Congress in Paris. Alagendra helped set up the Yayasan Hoku Malaysia in 1992, which helps former Malaysian players with educational and financial assistance.
