In 1963, Malaya, North Borneo (Sabah), Sarawak and Singapore joined to form the Federation of Malaysia. On 5 May 1964 the NOCs of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak formed the Olympic Council of Malaysia. Three of these states had already competed at the Olympics previously, but they would march under one banner at the 1964 Tokyo Games. Singapore separated from Malaysia in 1965, and since then Singapore has competed on its own again. Malaysia has since competed at all Games of the Olympiad except in 1980. It won its first Olympic medal, a bronze by Alan Sidek Mohamed and Ajib Sidek Mohamed in men’s badminton double, its national sport, in 1992, and has won five more Olympic medals in badminton, three silvers and two bronzes, as well as a bronze in platform diving 2012 won by Pandelela Pamg.
