Biography

Prior to joining the crack Polytechnic CC in 1908, Charles Denny rode for Wimbledon CC, where he won many club titles. He finished second to Charles Bartlett in the 100 km race at the London Olympics, and after finishing third behind Bartlett and Billy Pett in the NCU 50-mile Championship in 1909, Denny was crowned champion, at Coventry, the following year. However, he had to work hard for the title after puncturing three times and enduring a nasty fall after 23 miles. He remounted, and went on to beat Arthur Denny in a sprint finish by half-a-wheel. After setting many local records on grass, Charles Denny established a new world 20-mile paced record in 1911, and finished second in that year’s 10-mile Muratti Cup at Manchester, losing by a yard to Reg Player of Cambridge. Still cycling beyond the age of 50, Denny won the Veterans Trophy for over 50s at the annual Meeting of Champions at Herne Hill, in 1936.
