At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Johan Kankkonen placed 34th in the individual road time trial and fifth with the team. The team probably missed a better result when their best rider, Juho Jaakonaho, did not finish due to a burst tire.
Kankkonen began his business career around 1900 working in his father’s shop in Ylivieska. Following his father’s death in 1920, he continued independently with his own trading business and also managed the local branch of the Helsinki Joint Stock Bank. He was active in municipal affairs as a member of the local council and served for many years as the municipality’s treasurer.
Kankkonen was married to Hilda Amanda Koski.
