Biography

Between 1956 and 1972 Tibor Lendvai was a cyclist of Vasas SC where he achieved his best results on the track, mostly in the 1000 metres time trial and the tandem race. In the former discipline he won the Hungarian championship title three times (1963, 1964, 1968) and in the latter twice (1968, 1969). In 1971 he won the individual championship title in the sprint and the national road title in criterium. He won three more championship titles with Vasas in the 4000m team pursuit (1966, 1967, 1969). During his career he set several national records.

Between 1963 and 1971 Lendvai was the member of the Hungarian national squad. At the 1964 World Championships in Paris he finished 12th with the Hungarian 4000m pursuit team. His achieved his greatest success at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, where he finished ninth with his clubmate András Baranyecz in the tandem and finished 17th in the 1000 meters. In the latter event, his national record achieved at the Olympics was only beaten in 1986. In recognition of his career and successes he also received the title of All time champion from his affiliation and from the Hungarian Cycling Association.

He was trained as an architectural technician and already during his sports career he worked for the Középülettervező Vállalat. After his domestic career, he competed twice in Canada for a year and learned and studied the most modern methods of architects, which he later used at home as well. He also designed and built two bicycle tracks in Woodbridge, Canada in concrete, and an indoor wooden track in Delhay. During his long career, he succeeded in harmonizing the profession and sport, which is why he was called the great master of “harmonization”.
