The two best sprinters in the world were considered to be France’s Daniel Morelon and Pierre Trentin. They had been World Champions in 1966 and were favored to win the tandem gold. They did so with ease, winning all seven races. Their straight race final victory was over the Dutch team of Jan Jansen and Leijn Loevesijn. Although outstanding as individual sprinters, this was the final major championship they would win as a tandem. Jan Jansen was not related to the Jan Janssen who competed for the Netherlands in the 1960 Olympic road race and who, in 1968, won the Tour de France.
