During his career Antal Megyerdi was a state-sponsored amateur cyclist with the Hungarian Cycling Federation. Megyerdi had an impressive record in Hungary, winning seven national time trial titles (1959–63, 1965–66), three Mecsek Cup stage race titles (1960, 1962, 1965), and two national titles on the track. He also had success outside of Hungary, including winning the 1960 edition of the Tour of Slovakia when he was only 20-years-old.
Throughout the 1960s Megyerdi was a mainstay at the Peace Race, riding in every edition apart from the 1967 race. His best result came at the 1966 race when he finished eighth overall and won the fifth stage. In 1962 he finished ninth in the amateur race at the UCI Road World Championships in Italy. That same year he finished fourth in the Tour of Yugoslavia, including winning a stage, before finishing sixth a year later. His consistent performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1964 Games in Tokyo where he placed 47th in the road race, only 0.15 seconds behind the race winner. Megyerdi, a printer by trade, also worked as a cycling coach after his competitive career ended.
