Biography

Peter Nelson was a talented cyclist who became the South Australian state champion in the 15, 20, and 50-mile events in 1950. The following year Nelson won a road race as part of the Olympic trials to earn himself a place at the Helsinki Games. Despite his good form ahead of the Olympics, he failed to finish in the individual road race and was part of the 4,000 metres team pursuit that also underperformed on the track. On the long journey from Australia he met his future wife Marjorie Jackson, who won two gold medals on the track in Helsinki, with the pair getting married a year later. Nelson won another state title in 1953 when he became the champion in the 50-mile event. Sadly he was only 45-years-old when he died from leukaemia in February 1977.
