Biography

Carl-Uwe Steeb, nicknamed “Charly”, was a German tennis player who represented West Germany at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, reaching the singles quarter-finals before losing in straight sets, 6-7, 5-7, 3-6 to the eventual silver medallist Tim Mayotte of the USA. Partnering with Eric Jelen, the pair lost their first round match in the men’s doubles. Four years later at Barcelona, Steeb represented re-unified Germany and placed ninth in the singles.

Steeb’s highest world ranking was number 14 in 1990 in the singles, and number 41 in 1989 in the doubles. He won three ATP tournaments in total. In 1988 and 1989 Steeb was a member of the German Davis Cup team that beat Sweden in the final on both occasions. In 1989 and 1998 he also won the World Team Cup at Rochusclub Düsseldorf. From 1999-2001 Steeb was captain of the German Davis Cup team.

Steeb started working for a Swiss sports management agency in 2014 and was involved in the management of ice hockey and golf players. The company also regularly organized the Porsche European Open in Hamburg, a golf tournament with two million euros in prize money.
