Biography

Ángel Romero was a Mexican cycling prodigy, he won the Mexican title in 1948 at the young age of 16. Nicknamed “Zapopan” after his hometown, Romero won numerous national competitions, including the Vuelta de Mexico. He became “Mexican athlete of the year” in 1953, but never had a major international breakthrough. He quit cycling while still young, and focused on politics, becoming mayor of Zapopan twice (1962-1963 and 1974-1976), as well as a municipal council member in Guadalajara. He was still the council member for sports in Zapopan when he died of cancer in 2007.
