In 1968 Spanish cyclist Luis Zubero placed 28th in the road race at the Mexico City Olympics, just over five minutes behind the race winner. Zubero then turned professional, finishing second overall in the 1969 edition of the Tour de l’Avenir in France. After winning several races in Spain he made his début at the Tour de France in 1970, finishing 15th in the general classification, including second on stage 12 behind Eddy Merckx. Zubero rode in several more Grand Tours, including two more editions of the Tour de France and three editions of the Giro d’Italia, before retiring in 1975.
