Biography

A solid back and wonderful striker of the ball, Percy O’Reilly was a member of the Ireland team that shared the silver medal with the Hurlingham Club at the 1908 Olympics. He played his club polo with Westmeath Wanderers and won the Irish County Cup with North-Westmeath. He was also a winner of the All-Ireland Open Cup, and the Patriotic Cup against England. In 1911 he was an 8-goal handicap player. A former Captain in the 6th Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort’s Own) O’Reilly resigned his commission in 1901. His daughter Viola married General Sir Miles Dempsey, a senior British Army officer who served in both Wars and was a personal friend of Dwight D. Eisenhower.
