Between April 1903 and January 1911, Thomas Grenfell Wedge, known as “Tricky” won 29 Cornwall caps and in 1907 won the first of two England caps, against France at Richmond. He became the first St. Ives to player to be capped by England and at the time of his death in 1964 remained the only one to have achieved that honour. A fine scrum-half, he was a member of the Cornwall team that won the 1908 County Championship for the first time. In October, he then played against Australia twice. Firstly at Camborne and then at the White City in the Olympic Games. Cornwall lost on both occasions but Tricky Wedge was certainly a winner. After the Olympic medal presentation, for which the Cornish lads each received a red and white cap, but just one silver medal between them, lots were drawn to see who kept the medal, and Wedge was the lucky winner. A fisherman by trade, Tricky would often work on Saturday morning but his skipper would let him off early to go and play for St Ives or Cornwall. He emigrated to America for a few years and later served as a coastguard during the World War II.
