Fred Newbery was born and educated in England, at the Finsburg Technical College in London. He came to the United States in 1898, settling in St. Louis. He set up a well-known electrical engineering firm, which consulted extensively throughout the United States. Not well known as a golfer, he was a member of Glen Echo Golf Club in St. Louis, where the 1904 Olympic golf events were contested. He later lived in Michigan and owned the Newbery Electric Company.
