Throughout his life, Alan Raphael played many sports, including cricket, squash, tennis, and golf, but had the most success in field hockey. He was selected to represent Canada in this sport at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where his country was eliminated in the preliminary round after losing six matches and winning only one; Raphael played in all seven games and scored one of the two goals in their lone victory against Hong Kong. By career he was a successful investment advisor, but also provided commentary for field hockey at the 1976 Montreal Games and was elected vice-president of the national team in 1977. He was inducted into the Canadian Field Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017 as part of his 1964 Olympic team.
