Ronald Davies started playing for Bowdon, one of the leading hockey clubs in the north of England, as a teenager, and made his county début for Cheshire at the age of 20. A prolific goalscorer, he had played more than 20 games for Cheshire, and also represented The North in England International trials, when it was discovered he was eligible to play for Wales, and Davies made his international début for his “new” country against Scotland at Inverness in March 1939. The following month, playing for Cheshire Casuals in the Worthing Easter Hockey Festival, Davies scored all four goals in a 4-1 win over the host club, which took his tally for the season to an amazing 100 goals. Davies was a member of the Great Britain silver medal-winning team at the 1948 London Olympics, despite playing in only one match, the goalless draw against Switzerland in the opening group match. Davies continued playing for Wales into his late 30s and was still playing for Bowdon beyond the age of 46.
