Biography

Hew Fraser was educated at Tayport Public School and then went into the life assurance business. Hockey was his chosen sport, and Fraser was a member of the Edinburgh club. He became a Scottish international in 1906, and in 1908 won a bronze medal at the London Olympics. He played as a half-back in the 4-0 win over Germany, but was in the forward line when they lost 6-1 to England in the semi-final. After the Olympics, Fraser played for the Carlton Hockey Club in Edinburgh and also became captain of the Scottish national side in 1910.

During World War I, Fraser served as a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA) and later received a commission. He moved to London after the War, where he ran his own firm of insurance brokers, H. T. Fraser & Co. Ltd. He played hockey for the West Herts club and won Hertfordshire county honours at the age of 44. Fraser was also interested in politics, and stood as a Liberal party candidate for the Wood Green constituency of London at the 1929 and 1935 General Elections without winning a seat. In 1936 he was elected as their prospective candidate for any forthcoming election, but he died just two years later.

At the time of his death, at the age of 61, Fraser lived in Potters Bar but died suddenly while on holiday with his family in the Scottish Highland town of Boat of Garten in Inverness-shire.
